Chapter 30: I Decided to Investigate - Part 3
“N-Now I see…”
After I finished explaining everything I had uncovered, Kuon responded with a mix of confusion and admiration in her voice.
“So, is this Nagamoto guy well-known in the world of exorcists or supernatural abilities?”
“…No, I’ve never heard of him. There are very few people in this country who can use magic in the first place.”
Huh. So that means Nagamoto developed this magic and system on his own?
Or at least, that’s what I thought at first.
“But that man, Nagamoto Susumu, is a yakuza, right? Whether it’s magicians or exorcists, people in our world tend to be extremely proud of their abilities. I can’t imagine anyone willingly teaching their craft to someone like him.”
“Could he have learned it on his own?”
“That’s impossible. Magic and exorcism are not abilities one can acquire without a mentor.”
Kuon was adamant, and she had good reason to be.
First, sensing one’s own mana or spiritual energy without guidance is extremely difficult—akin to trying to track the movement of red blood cells inside your own body.
Moreover, magic and exorcism require specific catalysts, and the methods to create them are closely guarded secrets among practitioners.
That’s why, under normal circumstances, the only way for an ordinary person to acquire supernatural abilities is to become an apprentice to a magician or exorcist.
“So, you’re saying an ordinary person can’t gain supernatural powers?”
“Yes, at least not normally. But there are exceptions.”
“Exceptions?”
“The first case is people who are born with supernatural powers. We call them Espers. Unlike us, they can naturally control their abilities without any training.”
Oh, Espers are real? Do they use telepathy or psychokinesis like in fiction?
…Wait, this isn’t the time to get distracted.
“The second case is people like you, Iori-kun—those who are granted abilities by some supernatural entity. Though, to be honest, there are very few cases like this.”
“Ah… yeah.”
Now that she mentioned it, my abilities were forced onto me by that damn troublesome evil god, Ashera.
If I was given powers like that, then it’s possible that someone else was too.
“In any case, now that we know all this, we don’t need to take further action. If we report this to the main branch, the country’s Anti-Supernatural Task Force will handle it. Those yakuza are just lowlifes looking to sell drugs. Taking them down will be easy.”
…Huh?
Did she just casually drop a bombshell on me?
Well, if that's the case, then I guess this matter is wrapped up for now.
But for some reason, I couldn’t shake off this uneasy feeling.
Was this really the end of the incident?
Were those guys really doing all this just to produce their products?
Doubts kept swirling around in my mind.
“Iori-kun, is something wrong?”
“Ah, no, it’s nothing. I’ll leave the rest to you, Kuon.”
“Yes, leave it to me. Once again, thank you so much for all your help.”
“Yeah. See you at school.”
After ending the call, I immediately started researching Yamafuji-kai.
But I wasn’t looking for their history or organizational structure—I wasn’t interested in that complicated stuff.
“…If I run at full speed, I can get there in about five minutes.”
After memorizing the location of the Yamafuji-kai headquarters and calculating the time needed to reach it, I began preparing for a direct assault.

—Side: Alicia
“…There’s been suspicious activity from the Yamafuji-kai?”
In a high-rise apartment built in front of the station, I—Alicia Kamori—was receiving a report from my older subordinate.
"It seems that the organization has been in turmoil lately due to the fact that Kumicho Nagamoto Susumu hasn't been appearing in public."
"Yamafuji-kai had strong ties with the Russian mafia, right?"
"Yes. Also, it seems that about three months ago, they were working with the Russian mafia on a plan to manipulate that boy, but they suddenly withdrew from it."
This wasn't just suspicious—it was clearly abnormal.
The possible explanations were...
"You have surveillance on Nagamoto's house, right?"
"Yes. We have three people stationed around the area and one inside, rotating shifts."
"Then do we know Nagamoto's health condition?"
"The reports indicate that he is perfectly healthy."
Nagamoto Susumu turned 77 this year.
I considered the possibilities—dementia, an illness, or even that he had already died and someone else was leading the organization. But that didn’t seem to be the case.
"However, he's been acting strangely recently."
"Strangely?"
"Apparently, he came up with a new business idea. For the past month, he's been spending a lot of time in the headquarters' basement."
"Does that business have any connection to that dating chat service?"
"Yes. In fact, it's said that Nagamoto was the one who originally came up with that chat service. Also, he's been taking jars and glass bottles from the basement and instructing people to place them in certain buildings."
"This is getting even more confusing..."
To get to the bottom of this, I'd probably have to go directly to that basement myself.
I had just managed to infiltrate the school, and now this. Why does trouble keep piling up one after another?
"And what did the Director say?"
"'Due to the connection with the Russian mafia, they are to be considered a high-priority threat, but the final decision is left to the field commander.'"
"Hah, so basically, it's all on me."
"…What will you do?"
The ideal outcome would be for Yamafuji-kai and the Russian mafia to destroy each other without causing any collateral damage.
But we always have to assume the worst-case scenario.
Our mission is to eliminate any threats approaching Iori Shuu.
Considering that, the best course of action is—
"I'll take care of Yamafuji-kai myself. You guys handle taking down the Russian mafia's liaison."
"…Are you going in alone, Chief?"
"Yeah, I prefer solo play—it’s less hassle."
"Understood. When is the operation?"
Checking my notepad, I quickly determined the optimal date for the mission.
"This Sunday, at 10 PM. Have the headquarters mapped out by then."
