 Chapter 31: I Decided to Investigate – Part 4

Alicia's POV

"...Clear."

I exhaled deeply after sneaking into the mansion that served as the Yamafuji-kai's headquarters.

I had infiltrated numerous organizations for covert operations, but no matter how many times I did it, I could never get used to this feeling.

Any agent, no matter how skilled, could die in an instant if luck wasn’t on their side.

Thinking about that, I must have been incredibly lucky to have survived this long.

(Alright, let's get started.)

I drew my pistol from its holster, a special model equipped with a suppressor, and began moving toward the basement.

I already knew where the staircase leading to the basement was. I had also memorized the route and the number of guards stationed along the way.

(…Three of them, just as reported.)

At the end of the hallway, a sturdy iron door was being guarded by three men—two armed with pistols and one wielding a dagger.

I swiftly closed the distance and, in a single breath, incapacitated the pistol-wielding man and the one with the dagger with a spinning kick.

"You little—gah!?"

The remaining man tried to aim his gun at me, but before he could pull the trigger, the sole of my shoe slammed into his face.

…Phew, at least I didn't have to waste any bullets.

After confirming that all three men were unconscious, I turned my attention to the password input device mounted beside the iron door.

According to prior intel, the password for this door didn't reset periodically—it remained the same at all times.

Now, I just had to trace the fingerprints left on the buttons…

(Alright, I’m in.)

I slowly opened the iron door and quickly rigged it from the inside to prevent anyone from easily entering. Then, I descended the dimly lit staircase.

Since I had already adjusted my vision to the darkness, I moved smoothly through the shadows.

In less than five minutes, I arrived at my destination—the basement room. But—

"...What is this place?"

The room, dimly lit by fluorescent lights, resembled an operating room.

Various surgical tools hung on the walls, and shelves were lined with bottles filled with liquids of different colors.

But more than anything, my eyes were drawn to the slab in the center of the room—a fleshy mass, about the size of a child, resting atop what looked like an operating table.

It appeared to have been carved out of something much larger. Yet, it still pulsed, and faint wisps of smoke rose from its surface.

Could this be the source of Yamafuji-kai’s madness? Or rather, the very thing that had driven Nagamoto insane?

『This is Team B, "Vator." "Scouter," respond.』

Just as I was contemplating the situation, a voice came through my earpiece.

"Scouter"—that was my callsign for this mission.

"This is 'Scouter.' How's the situation on your end?"

『We've successfully captured the target. No injuries. We're taking him back to headquarters now.』

"Understood. Also, could you send a few people to assist me? The target here is much larger than expected—I don't think I can carry it alone."

『Got it. We'll dispatch backup immediately.』

"Alright, I'll be waiting."

With that, I ended the transmission.

Now, if only we could capture the primary target, Nagamoto, this mission would be perfect.

"Well, well, what a charming young lady we've got here."

A voice suddenly called out from behind me.

I instinctively leaped back, creating distance, and aimed my gun at the source of the voice.

Standing there was an old man dressed in a plain green tracksuit—an unremarkable figure at first glance.

But his eyes gleamed with undeniable madness and bloodlust.

He matched the intel we had gathered.

No doubt about it—this was Nagamoto.

"A public security agent, huh? I always thought you people were just an urban legend. Never expected to see one in person."

"…I’d love to hear how you managed to break through the lockdown. Might be useful for my future missions."

"Oh, nothing special, really. I just…"

Nagamoto casually grabbed a nearby shelf, effortlessly lifting it—and hurled it straight at me.

"…I simply follow the voice."

"…The voice?"

"That’s right. I don’t know when it started, but at some point, I began hearing a voice. And as long as I obey it, even an old geezer like me can do things like this."

With that, he grabbed another shelf and flung it my way.

I dodged it and fired several shots, but he swung a spare operating table like a club, swatting the bullets away as if they were nothing.

I didn’t understand what he was talking about, but one thing was clear—this situation was bad.

He was far beyond human at this point.

With my current equipment, there was no way I could stop this monster.

And now, of all times, that thought resurfaced in my mind—

"Any agent, no matter how skilled, could die in an instant if luck wasn’t on their side."

"Sorry, young lady. I’ve got nothing personal against you, but this is how we survive. Just give up and di—GWAH!?"

Suddenly, Nagamoto let out a bizarre scream as his body was sent flying.

His frail form crashed into the scattered debris, slamming against the wall with a violent impact.

"Oops, did I overdo it?"

A carefree voice echoed from somewhere in the room.

I quickly turned towards the source of the voice—and saw a boy, around my age, dressed in sportswear.

(…Iori Shuu.)

Yes, the one standing there was none other than my surveillance target—Iori Shuu himself.
