Classmate wa Isekai de Yuusha ni Natta kedo, Ore dake Gendai Nihon ni Okizari ni Narimashita

Prologue

"Everyone, in position?"

In a deserted alley intersection—

Vigo, a man in work clothes stationed in the abandoned parking lot of an old, unused building, contacted his scattered comrades through an earpiece.

"Gabriel here, position secured."

"Garrett here, likewise."

"Miller, deployed in a sniping position."

After confirming everyone's positions, Vigo pulled out his hidden handgun and loaded it with non-lethal rounds.

"Let's go over the plan again. Our mission is to capture the target alive and deliver them to the client. Use non-lethal rounds or stun guns to neutralize them and transport them to the waiting van."

"Understood. But do we really need this much firepower just to snatch a kid with no bodyguards?"

"There’s unconfirmed intel that a certain country’s forces are also after this kid. Don’t let your guard down just because it’s 'just a kidnapping'."

"Still, what’s so special about this kid? From what I saw, he's just an ordinary Japanese junior high school student."

"Beats me. The client won’t talk about the details. Rumor has it, this kid is—"

"Cut the chatter. The target is in sight."

Hearing the report from the sniper positioned above, the group's demeanor changed.

"Gabriel and I will advance. Garrett and Miller, hold position."

"Understood."

Vigo peeked out from cover to confirm the target.

A Japanese boy in a school uniform, carrying a plastic grocery bag in one hand.

His build was neither big nor small, neither fat nor skinny—just an average Japanese teenager.

(A kid like this is worth 1 billion dollars?)

Vigo thought as he carefully closed the distance.

As per the intel, no bodyguards or rival operatives were in sight. The target walked without a hint of caution.

(Perfect conditions.)

Vigo positioned himself in the boy’s blind spot.

He gave Gabriel a hand signal, ready to move—

"……Huh?"

His vision flipped upside down.

He instinctively tried to break his fall, but it was too late.

"Gah!?"

A powerful impact coursed through his entire body from his back.

More than enough to knock him out.

"Shit!"

Gabriel immediately raised his gun and scanned for the assailant.

But aside from him and the unconscious Vigo, there was no one else around.

(No way…!?)

He suddenly recalled a famous detective novel's line—

"When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."

His gun turned towards where the target was—

But the boy was already gone.

(W-What!? Where did he go!?)

Panicking, Gabriel tried to move to search—

Then, he noticed something wrong.

"…What the hell?"

His lower body was sinking into a mud-like substance.

(Impossible. This was solid asphalt a moment ago!)

Struggling only made him sink further.

"Shit, shit, shit!"

The more he thrashed, the deeper he got, his strength draining—

Soon, his consciousness faded, just like Vigo.

◇◇◇

"Garrett, any response from Vigo and Gabriel? We need to pull out soon."

"Nothing! No response at all!"

"Damn it, what’s happening!?"

Miller wiped cold sweat as he checked his watch

Their client and collaborators had informed them that they could only disable the surrounding security cameras for a maximum of 45 minutes.

Thirty minutes had already passed since they had begun their operation.

If they stayed any longer, they'd risk exposing themselves to this country's law enforcement.

(But we can’t retreat empty-handed.)

This was their last chance. With that thought, Miller peered through the scope of his sniper rifle.

"…There he is!"

"Where!?"

"Two hundred meters left of the intersection! Right at the edge of the capture zone!"

Miller shouted at Garrett, then aimed his sights at their target—a young boy.

Just as he was about to pull the trigger, a sudden chill ran down his spine.

"…What the hell is this?"

"Miller! What happened!?"

"My… my rifle… it's frozen."

The sniper rifle Miller had relied on for years was now completely encased in ice—along with his fingers.

His body slowly transformed into an ice sculpture, until he could no longer move.

"Run, Garrett…! This isn’t normal!"

Hearing that strained voice through his earpiece, Garrett bolted from the scene.

"Shit! What the hell is happening!?"

He had thought the payout for this job was suspiciously high.

He had found it strange that they were allowed to use firearms.

It was easy to assume there was more to this job than met the eye.

(But how the hell was I supposed to expect this!?)

This was supposed to be a simple job—just abducting an ordinary middle school boy.

How was he supposed to predict that he'd end up trapped in some twisted horror movie in real life?

Garrett sprinted toward the van where they were supposed to regroup.

Yet no matter how far he ran, the scenery in his vision never changed. It was still the exact same spot where he had been hiding earlier.

"Aaahhh… Ahhhhhhh!?"

Garrett realized it—or rather, he was forced to.

Something massive behind him was pulling him back.

"Shit! Shit! Shit!"

Panicked, he pulled his pistol from his holster and fired behind him.

But the bullets merely sailed through the air, striking nothing but concrete walls.

Eventually, he ran out of ammo.

His knees buckled, and he collapsed to the ground.

"This is insane…"

Those were his final words before he, like the others, lost consciousness.

◇◇◇

After thoroughly restraining the last one who had passed out, I let out a deep sigh.

Seriously, they should consider how exhausting it is to deal with these kinds of people all the time.

I had already healed them up with recovery magic, so I’d just leave them for someone passing by to find.

As I was thinking that, my phone rang.

"Onii-san, are you still not done shopping?"

"I just finished."

"You're on house duty today, so come home already."

"Yeah, yeah, as you command."

After ending the call, I decided to head straight home as instructed.

But before that, I needed to check something.

"Status."
