Chapter 21: After the Monster Hunt (Part 2)

(TL/N: Sorry guyssss, I mistranslate the name of Kyori into Miyari (Basically her name is Kuon Kyori(久遠京里) instead of Kudou Miyari(工藤深愛理), guess I'll be changing it now! My baddd!)😭

"Where… am I?"

When I woke up, I found myself in the bedroom of what seemed to be a high-end apartment.

A ceiling fan was installed on the ceiling, and sunlight streamed in through the large windows. The room’s decor was fairly simple, with only a bookshelf and a potted plant.

I needed to figure out where I was. As I sat up, ignoring the throbbing pain in my head, a damp towel slid off my forehead.

...Did someone take care of me?

As I pondered that thought, the door creaked open.

"I'm glad. You’re finally awake."

The person who entered was Kuon, wearing an apron and holding a washbasin filled with damp towels.

Finally, I remembered. After everything that happened, I had lost consciousness.

"Sorry, Kuon. I must’ve caused you trouble."

"Not at all, Iori-kun! You don’t need to apologize for anything. More importantly—"

Kuon placed the washbasin on a shelf beside the bed and then bowed deeply to me.

"I'm truly sorry. Not only did I put you in such danger, but this also happened to you…"

Ah—come to think of it, I never really explained skills or MP to Kuon in detail.

She must think it’s her fault that I passed out from a nosebleed.

"Nah, don’t worry about it. This was completely my own mistake."

"B-but—"

"If you keep apologizing, it’ll just make me feel bad. Neither of us got hurt, and we managed to take down that monster. That’s what matters, right?"

"…You’re right. Understood."

Kuon finally lifted her head, but her face still held traces of guilt.

Hmm, maybe I should change the subject.

"By the way, Kuon, where is this place?"

"Huh? My house, of course."

…Huh? Did I mishear that?

Just now, I could’ve sworn Kuon said this was her house.

"So, right. What about food? Can you eat?"

"Uh… if you’re offering, then I’ll take it."

"Understood. Then please wait in the living room. Ah, the living room is past the door to the right after you leave the bedroom."

Kuon, seeming more at ease now, returned to her usual demeanor and left the room.

On the other hand, I cautiously stepped into the hallway, feeling a cold sweat on my back.

(…It’s really quiet.)

Aside from Kuon and me, there was no sign of anyone else. It seemed like her family wasn’t home.

Realizing that, I let out a small sigh of relief. If I had suddenly run into her parents, I wouldn’t have known how to react.

As I entered the living room, a pleasant aroma of miso soup filled the air.

On the table, there was a proper breakfast set: miso soup, white rice, pickled vegetables, and ham and eggs.

Kuon gestured for me to sit down with a simple “go ahead.”

I pressed my palms together and said, “Thanks for the meal,” before immediately taking a sip of the simple miso soup with tofu and seaweed.

"I hope it suits your taste…"

"It’s really good. Honestly, it might even be better than the miso soup at my place."

"O-oh, really? That makes me happy."

Hearing my honest praise, Kuon’s face turned red.

"By the way, should I contact my family?"

"I already told them I’d be staying at a friend’s place, so it’s fine. But more importantly, Kuon, are you sure it’s okay to let me into your house? What about your parents—"

"It’s fine. I’ve always lived here alone."

For just a brief moment, her tone changed—it was the same cold voice I had heard on the first day of school.

…So talking about her family is a sensitive topic. I decided not to push any further.

"I see. Then, about the Gyūki and other yokai, they won’t be showing up anymore, right?"

"Yes. At the very least, I don’t think anything like that will appear in this city again."

Hearing that, I finally felt relief from the bottom of my heart.

The thought of my dad or little sister getting attacked on their way to work or school had been a constant source of worry.

After that, we continued chatting idly while finishing breakfast. Once we were done washing the dishes, we finally took a break.

"Phew…"

I let out a breath of relief and sipped the tea Kuon had brewed for me.

Then, she sat across from me, holding an envelope in her hands.

"This is the reward for your help in defeating the Gyūki. Please, take it."

Feeling a bit intimidated by Kuon’s unusually formal attitude, I accepted the envelope.

The thickness and weight of it felt off.

It wasn’t filled with coins, so it had to be entirely paper bills. But if it was heavy enough to feel like this… just how much money was inside?

No, I shouldn’t think about it too much. It was starting to freak me out.

"That envelope contains approximately one million yen. If you find it insufficient, please don’t hesitate to say so."

For the second time in the past hour, I doubted my own ears.

One million? Did she just say one million yen?

"No, no, no! I can’t accept that much money!"

"Considering the Gyūki extermination, this amount is actually quite low. And if you refuse, it will bring shame to the Kuon name."

…Yeah, she wasn’t going to back down until I accepted it.

Reluctantly, I took the envelope she was holding out and stored it in my Item Box.

(…Maybe I should use this to buy a new watch.)

Just then, my phone buzzed.

When I checked, I found an angry message from my sister: "When are you coming home?"

"Sorry, Kuon. I need to get going."

"Understood. Your shoes and belongings are by the bedroom entrance."

I hurriedly got ready and headed to the entrance.

"See you at school."

"Yes, see you at school."

Just as I reached for the door handle—

"Iori-kun!"

"?"

"Thank you. Truly, thank you so much!"

I turned around, startled.

Kuon gave a deep bow, her face beaming with the brightest smile I’d ever seen.

"O-oh."

Feeling embarrassed, I lowered my head slightly in response, then left her house.

I arrived back in my room about half an hour later.

Even though I had only been away for a few hours, I felt an odd sense of nostalgia.

"Alright."

I muttered Status in my mind.
