Chapter 13: Encounter with the Academy’s Angel

After a short 10-minute train ride with a transfer, I arrived at the front gate of my new high school.

The entrance was crowded with students and their parents, all taking commemorative photos.

Since a high school entrance ceremony is a once-in-a-lifetime event, it was only natural for people to want to capture the moment in photos or videos.

Even my dad had been eager to come, but work got in the way.

Weaving through the crowd, I made my way into the school building and headed straight for my classroom.

Next, we were supposed to gather in our assigned classrooms to meet our classmates and teachers.

I had already been informed which class I was in, and for now, I planned to keep a low profile and avoid standing out too much.

"Alright, this is it."

Class 1-C—the classroom where I would be spending my first year of high school.

Taking a deep breath to ease my slight nervousness, I entered through the back door.

As soon as I stepped in, about 20 students who had already arrived turned their gazes toward me all at once.

They were probably trying to size me up, figuring out what kind of person I was.

Feeling a bit awkward under their scrutiny, I quickly glanced at the seating chart on the blackboard and made my way to my assigned desk.

(Oh, nice. The window seat at the very back.)

It seemed like neither the homeroom teacher nor the student sitting next to me had arrived yet.

That meant I could relax for a little while.

Just as I settled in, the classroom suddenly grew noisy.

For a brief moment, I panicked, wondering if I had done something wrong.

However, judging by the reactions around me, that wasn’t the case.

Then why was everyone getting excited? Curious, I followed their gazes.

And there—

A girl with an almost unreal level of beauty stood in the doorway.

Her light brown hair was tied up in a neat chignon, smooth and shiny as silk. Her fair skin was as flawless as a porcelain doll’s.

Long eyelashes framed her large, expressive eyes, enhancing the ethereal quality about her.

She paid no attention to the stares directed at her, walking gracefully to the blackboard to check the seating chart.

Then, without hesitation, she placed her bag on the desk beside mine.

Sitting down, she turned to me and gave a gentle smile before nodding slightly in greeting.

I returned the nod before we both looked away in opposite directions.

"Good morning, everyone."

At that moment, a small young woman, who appeared to be our homeroom teacher, entered the classroom.

The other students promptly returned to their seats.

"It looks like everyone is here. My name is Hiromi Koshimizu, and I will be your homeroom teacher for Class 1-C. I look forward to working with you all this year."

After writing her name on the board, Koshimizu-sensei gave us a polite bow.

"Now, let’s have everyone introduce themselves. We’ll go in order by attendance number. Let’s start with... number one, Aizawa-san."

"Y-Yes! I’m Toru Aizawa! I played basketball in middle school. Nice to meet you all!"

"Alright, thank you. Next, number two..."

As a few more students finished their introductions, my turn quickly arrived.

Such was the fate of those with surnames starting with “A,” I mused as I stood up.

"Um, I’m Iori Shuu. My hobbies are gaming, and my special skill is cooking. I look forward to spending this year with you all."

Keeping my greeting short and simple, I immediately took my seat again.

The introductions continued, all fairly standard, until finally, it was the turn of the girl sitting beside me.

"Kuon Miyari. Pleased to meet you."

At that moment, I felt a strong sense of rejection emanating from her—was it just my imagination?

Well, either way, Kuon and I lived in different worlds.

There was no reason for us to ever grow close.

With that thought, I shifted my focus back to listening to the rest of my classmates’ mostly unremarkable introductions.

◇◇◇

A week had passed since the entrance ceremony.

After finishing dinner as usual, I returned to my room.

To avoid being reported by anyone, I cast a Recognition Inhibition Spell on myself, changed into a tracksuit, and set the timer on my watch.

"Alright, let’s do this."

Opening the window, I stepped outside and effortlessly climbed onto the roof, just like yesterday.

From there, I leaped from rooftop to rooftop, moving swiftly through the cityscape.

Tonight, I planned to test the limits of my current stamina.

Instead of heading toward the station area, I decided to go toward the mountains.

I repeatedly performed large jumps, moving from the city to the farmlands along the national highway, and then into the mountain paths.

After about 30 minutes, the lights of the bustling downtown area were completely out of sight, leaving me in near-total darkness deep in the mountains.

Physically, I still had plenty of energy left.

But if I went any further, even teleporting home with Spatial Transfer Magic would be a hassle due to the dirt and debris.

Maybe it was time to call it a night and head back.

"…Huh?"

Just as I was thinking that, I suddenly heard a scream—followed by the sound of an explosion.

What the hell was happening out here in the middle of nowhere?

Unable to suppress my curiosity, I took off toward the source of the noise.

Within seconds, I arrived at a strangely wide-open clearing.

My Recognition Inhibition Spell should still be active, but just to be safe, I hid behind cover as I approached the scene.

And what I saw there—

"…You’ve gotta be kidding me."

The scene before me was straight out of a video game or anime.

One figure, about the size of a young elementary schooler, had black skin covering its entire body and two horns protruding from its head.

The creature—an oni—was frantically swinging a small blade with a desperate expression.

And its opponent was—

"…I never expected to run into her like this."

Despite being covered in wounds and drenched in blood, the shrine maiden-clad girl glared fiercely at the oni with desperate determination.

It was Kuon Kyori.
