Chapter 2: I Leveled Up

"Onii-chan!"

"Whoa!"

A few hours after experiencing the bizarre phenomenon of viewing my status, my younger sister, Kana, arrived with our father and threw herself into my arms, tears in her eyes.

"I'm so glad... Onii-chan, you're really okay..."

"Don't worry so much. The doctor said there's nothing wrong with me."

I said that, but if I were in Kana's position, I’d probably be just as overwhelmed with anxiety.

As I gently patted my beloved sister’s back to reassure her, my father approached, concern written all over his face.

"You're not feeling sick? You're really okay?"

"Even you, Dad? I'm seriously fine."

"...I see. That's good, then."

Dad let out a sigh of relief as he looked at my face.

It was honestly surprising to see him this worried—he’s a workaholic who rarely ever comes home.

"Anyway, if anything happens, let me know immediately. Also, I brought you a change of clothes."

"Got it. Thanks."

"It's only natural. We're family. Now then, Kana, let’s go."

"...Okay. See you later, Onii-chan."

With that, Dad took Kana and left the hospital room.

Alright then.

"Status."

Skills: Appraisal, Universal Translation

As soon as I muttered the word, a semi-transparent screen appeared in front of me.

For better or worse, I had plenty of free time right now. I might as well use it wisely.

"First, let’s figure out how to use these skills."

I picked up a nearby paper cup and focused.

'Appraisal.'

Target: Paper Cup
Condition: Good
Note: Contains residual drinking water.

A semi-transparent screen, similar to the one that appeared when I used 'Status,' popped up.

This confirmed two things: first, 'Appraisal' reveals an object's condition, and second, skills are activated the same way as the 'Status' command.

Next, I needed to determine the skill's range.

I focused on the clock hanging on the wall in front of me and activated 'Appraisal' again.

Error. Targets beyond two meters require Appraisal Level 2 or higher.

The message on the screen was quite frustrating.

So, I needed to increase my level if I wanted to appraise things from a distance.

"The problem is how to level up…"

When people talk about leveling up, they usually mean fighting monsters.

But in modern Japan, there are no slimes or goblins running around.

So how exactly was I supposed to level up?

"...Well, I’ll figure that out later."

I shifted my focus to testing my next skill, 'Universal Translation.'

I pulled out my smartphone, opened a video app, and played a random foreign-language video.

As expected, I couldn’t understand a single word.

"'Universal Translation.'"

As soon as I activated the skill, the voices in the video started sounding like Japanese.

Next, I opened a video with multilingual subtitles and selected Arabic.

Even without reactivating the skill, the text on the screen now appeared as if it were in Japanese.

It seemed like 'Universal Translation' had a lasting effect once activated.

"One more thing to confirm."

I paused the video and switched the subtitle language from Arabic to Japanese.

The translation from the skill closely matched the official Japanese subtitles.

Hmm, the accuracy seems reliable.

Now, I needed to test the skill’s limits.

Just as I opened a German-language video and activated the skill—

"…?"

A sudden wave of drowsiness and exhaustion hit me.

I hadn’t done anything physically tiring, so why did I feel this way?

I quickly drank the remaining water from my paper cup, trying to shake off the sleepiness.

But my body felt heavy, and the exhaustion only intensified.

A bad feeling crept up my spine, and I immediately opened my 'Status' again.

"...I knew it."

My MP had dropped to a tenth of what it was before I started testing.

…So, skills consume MP.

And when MP runs low, exhaustion and drowsiness set in.

Luckily, I was already in a hospital bed.

I used my last bit of energy to jot down my findings in my phone’s memo app before lying down and closing my eyes.

[Skill usage in extreme conditions confirmed. Two languages acquired. One object appraised. Experience points distributed accordingly.]

"…What the hell?"

The next morning, I woke up to a shock even greater than yesterday’s.

Somehow, my level had increased by two overnight.

◇◇◇

After more testing, I uncovered several things.

First, leveling up. Apparently, successfully activating a skill grants experience points.

The key detail is "successful activation"—not just activation.

Yesterday, I failed to appraise the distant clock due to my level being too low. Because of that, I didn’t gain any experience from the attempt.

The second discovery was that overusing MP negatively impacts the body.

For instance, activating Appraisal requires 10 MP, while Universal Translation takes 15 MP.

Yesterday, I used Appraisal twice and Universal Translation twice.

Once my MP ran too low to activate another skill, I was hit with extreme drowsiness and exhaustion.

The good news? A full night’s sleep completely restores MP.

So, what happens if I try using a skill when my MP is completely gone?

To find out, I repeated yesterday’s experiment—spamming skills until my MP dropped to 5, then activating Appraisal one last time.

The result—

"…Ugh, this is awful."

A splitting headache. Dizziness. Fatigue. Nausea.

I could barely sit up in bed.

Still, I forced myself to open Status for confirmation.

Looks like when MP runs out, HP is consumed instead.

…Yeah, I need to be really careful about MP management.

I made a mental note to never attempt this again.

With that thought, I weakly reached for the nurse call button—because I desperately needed a sickness bag.
