Chapter 8: I Ended Up Helping Someone (Part 2)
"Alright, that’s it for today’s lesson. Make sure to finish page 23 by tomorrow. Class rep, lead the closing."
"Stand, bow."
""Thank you very much.""
The face of our homeroom teacher—famous for being the most passionate teacher in school—disappeared from the screen.
The next day, I was attending online classes as usual.
Since our midterm exams had just ended last week, and we were now back to regular lessons, I could tell that most of my classmates were relaxed, even through the screen.
…With one exception.
(…Alright.)
At the edge of my screen, the faces of all 26 students in my class were displayed.
Of course, Fujisawa-san was among them.
(『Appraise』.)

Just as I expected, the results hadn’t changed since yesterday.
My hope that it was some kind of error was shattered.
But if that’s the reality, then I just have to do what I can.
『Sorry for the sudden message, but do you know a girl named Iori Kana?』
I switched to the private chat and sent a message to Fujisawa-san.
She read it immediately, but no reply came.
Did something happen?
Or maybe she just didn’t want to answer that question?
Just as I was pondering this—
『Are you Kana-chan’s older brother, Iori-kun?』
From her message, it was clear that she hadn’t approached me yesterday just because I was Kana’s brother.
Which means… No, now’s not the time to dwell on that.
『Yeah, she’s my little sister. She told me about you, so—』
『Iori-kun, are you going to that store again today?』
『Yeah, that’s the plan.』
『If you don’t mind, could you come at 5 PM? I’ll answer your questions there.』
『Got it. Let’s talk more then.』
After sending that message and closing the chat, I glanced at the clock on my PC screen.
It was 16:27—about 30 minutes until our meeting.
I might as well practice while heading over.

After checking my newly listed skills, I grabbed an eco-bag, just like yesterday, and left the house.
◇◇◇
"Sorry, did I keep you waiting?"
"No, not at all."
When I arrived at the supermarket, Fujisawa-san was standing in the same spot as yesterday, holding an apron and a bag.
"…Where should we talk?"
"Could we go over to the bike parking lot?"
She pointed to the deserted bike parking area behind the supermarket.
Considering what we were about to discuss, that was probably the best choice.
I nodded, and she looked relieved before heading over.
"So, how’s Kana-chan doing?"
"She was pretty down when she heard you quit. She really looked up to you."
"…I see. I feel bad for Kana-chan."
Fujisawa-san looked genuinely remorseful as she said that.
"It’s because of your family situation, right? Can’t be helped."
"…Yeah, I guess so."
I pretended not to know anything and said it as casually as I could.
Her downcast expression and strained voice told me everything.
Judging by the results of my Appraisal, her home life was probably a living hell.
"Well, if anything ever happens, just let me know. My sister was worried about you too."
"O-Okay… Thanks."
I held out my hand.
She hesitated for a moment before shaking it back.
"! …Sorry, I have to go. Tell Kana-chan I said hi."
"Yeah, got it."
"See you tomorrow."
Just like yesterday, she suddenly seemed to notice something, her face filled with fear, and she bolted from the scene.
"…Alright."
After that, I bought the things Kana had asked for, along with some detergent, before heading home.
"Welcome back!"
When I entered the living room, Kana was lounging on the couch, lazily biting into a popsicle.
"I'm back. I saw Fujisawa-san earlier."
"Wait, really?! You saw Fujisawa-senpai!?"
She jumped up in pure shock.
"Yeah, she told me to say hi to you."
"…Was she doing okay?"
"She looked a little tired, but she seemed fine."
"I see…"
"I'm heading to my room. Want fried rice for dinner?"
"Yeah, that sounds good!"
I didn’t lie, but I also didn’t tell her the whole truth.
Then, I headed to my room.
"…Alright."
Sitting on my bed, I activated the skill I acquired yesterday—『Tracking & Detection Magic』.
This skill had two main effects:
Tracking: It allowed me to track a specific object I had touched before.
When activated, a 3D map appeared, and the tracked object was displayed as a red glowing point.
The drawback was I could only track things I had physically touched before.
Detection: It let me sense what was around me or my target.
The downside was that, just like tracking, it only worked on things I had touched before.
Also, I couldn’t get detailed information about the surroundings, but I could compensate for that with 『Appraisal』.
I spent last night testing it until I passed out, so I had a decent grasp of how it worked.
Combining it with 『Appraisal』, I checked Fujisawa-san’s current location and her surroundings.
"…What the hell."
I couldn’t help but mutter.
Now I understood.
Now I knew why she looked so exhausted.
"…I don’t have much time."
Clenching my fists, my blood boiling, I started preparing for what had to be done.
